His grandfather, Shri Lakshmipathy Bhagavathar, was his first teacher. This early training laid the groundwork for what would become an enduring relationship with music. “My grandfather was a strict but loving teacher. His lessons were never just about perfecting a raga but about instilling patience, perseverance, and humility in me,” says Vijay, reflecting on his formative years.
His parents, too, played an integral role in shaping his musical journey. His father, the late Shri K Ramashesha, and his mother, Smt. Lopa Mudra, both Carnatic musicians, imparted their wisdom and knowledge to him.
Even with a solid foundation in classical music, Vijay Prakash has always maintained that learning is an ongoing process. According to him, the beauty of music lies in its infinite permutations and combinations, despite the simplicity of its seven fundamental notes—Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni.
“Music is made up of only seven notes, yet the possibilities are endless. I firmly believe that no musician on this planet knows more than two percent of the vast expanse of music. Those who do, I would consider geniuses,” he remarks humbly.
“Each culture, each region, has its unique sound. There’s so much to learn and explore, and I know for sure that till my last day on this planet, I will be learning something new,” he adds with a smile.
When asked about the role of gurus in his life, Vijay Prakash is quick to acknowledge that their influence extends beyond the realm of music. His gurus have shaped his worldview, instilling in him values such as dedication, respect, and the pursuit of excellence.
One of the key moments in Vijay’s life was his association with legendary composer AR Rahman, who became both a mentor and a guide in his journey through Bollywood music. “Rahman sir is a genius, but he’s also one of the most grounded individuals I’ve ever met. His approach to music is spiritual, and being around him taught me the importance of surrendering to the art. He doesn’t chase success; he chases excellence, and that’s something I aspire to do as well,” says Vijay.
Vijay Prakash’s transition from Carnatic music to playback singing in Bollywood is a testament to his adaptability and willingness to learn. While many classical musicians find it challenging to shift to the commercial music industry, Vijay embraced the challenge thanks to the solid foundation his gurus provided.
His breakthrough moment came when he lent his voice to the Oscar-winning song Jai Ho from the film Slumdog Millionaire. The song became a global sensation, catapulting Vijay Prakash into the international limelight. Yet, even with such massive success, Vijay remains deeply connected to his roots. “The fame is fleeting, but the love for music is eternal. I am grateful for my opportunities, but I never forget where I come from,” he reflects.
