New Delhi: In a stirring address to the Indian parliament, renowned actor turned politician Kangana Ranaut ignited a movement to revive the two traditional cultural practices: folk music and wool weaving. Known for her bold and outspoken nature, Ranaut used her debut speech to emphasize the significance of preserving these age-old traditions that are intrinsic to India’s rich cultural heritage.

Opposition leaders argued that given the advance of technology, the need for operating traditional handlooms has come to a standstill. Once known for artistic weaving techniques and patterns unique to India, today this art form is practiced by a handful of families across India, who strive to keep the art breathing. On the other hand, India’s history of folk music is also fading due to the lack of interest in today’s world.

Ranaut stressed the fact that India serves as a repository of the country’s diverse cultural narratives. She argued that in today’s fast-paced world, it is hard to employ primitive techniques. The government has brought about many changes in the fields of financial transactions, transportation, innovation, and various other sectors while considering more for others, but the arts that once were the face of India, like classical folk music and handloom, are now falling apart.

She added that in addition to modernizing the country, the government should also preserve and maintain the continued existence of folk music, as these songs are not merely a form of entertainment but are crucial in preserving the stories, values, and histories of various communities. It has been a while since an MP (member of parliament) has used the political platform for centering attention toward cultural revival, rural development, and empowering artisans.

For wool weaving, she pointed out that it is not just a means of livelihood but also an art form that was popularized by Mahatma Gandhi during the “Swadeshi Movement’, reflecting the need to bestow support on the ingenuity and craftsmanship of artisans who have kept these art forms alive in today’s India. With the advent of industrialization and modern textiles, this traditional craft that once employed millions is now at risk of fading into oblivion. Using her debut speech as a politician, Ranaut called for measures to protect and promote wool weaving, ensuring that the skills are passed on to future generations.

Throughout her speech, Kangana Ranaut urged the government to take concrete steps to support these cultural practices, including grants and subsidies, educational programs, cultural festivals, and collaborations. Kangana’s passionate plea resonated widely, garnering support from various quarters, including fellow celebrities, cultural activists, and even opposition members. Several expressed their agreement by clapping the table.

Ranaut’s transition from the silver screen to the political arena has been unexpected and seamless. Her commitment to social issues and cultural preservation has always been evident in her public statements and actions. Her parliamentary speech highlighted her past commitments, urging for immediate government support to sustain India’s vibrant history of folk music aligning with her demands.

She also focused on the socio-economic point-of-view of the ones who were once associated with these professions and who, over generations, have felt that their skills and heritage were irrelevant in modern India. She also highlighted the government’s inefficacy in providing financial relief and alternative avenues for the craftsmen and partisans, who were forced to forgo their generational craft and seek alternative occupations.

In addition to sparking a renewed interest in folk music and wool weaving, several state governments are announcing initiatives to revive these traditions. Kangana’s debut speech at the parliament highlighted that preserving cultural heritage is a continuous and collective effort in a country as diverse as India. Ranaut’s advocacy highlights the crucial role that public figures play in today’s world in championing cultural causes.

Kangana’s impact in her first parliamentary speech signifies a new chapter of bigotry and ruse in Modi 3.0, marked by a commitment to cultural preservation and social advocacy. As she continues to champion these causes, the movement gains momentum; it promises to breathe new life into these ancient practices, ensuring they remain preserved and relevant in today’s modern world for the next generations to walk this earth.
