New Delhi: Zubin Mehta—what the soul is lost about in the drifting world of classical music, oozing with brightness unprepared, like some star radiating, lost within unmatched splendor amidst ethereal enchantment. He has been reigning in the conducting of orchestras almost colossally for more than half a century, up to reigning upon continents and leading the most preeminent orchestras of the world.

He keeps inspiring in return, thanks to his deepest readings, which are done in a charismatic way. It is this untamed passion for music that kept him going all these years and, of course, shall in the upcoming collaboration with the Symphony Orchestra of India, when on stage he brings all his enormous experience into play.

Mehta began his journey in classical music in Vienna, the vibrant city of culture, by getting enrolled in the prestigious Vienna Music Academy. As he says with reminiscences of his formative years in Vienna: “My early days in Vienna shaped my approach to Strauss. The rich musical heritage of the city, combined with the rigorous training I received, laid the bedrock for my career. I’d studied the works; I have since gone on to conduct Don Juan, Ein Heldenleben, and Four Last Songs for decades.”

This is while Vienna can rightfully be termed mucic’s very heartland. And in Mehta’s case, it additionally exposed him uniquely to the works of Richard Strauss. It was thus with great ardor that he approached the pieces, which transposed into a deep understanding and respect for Straus`s music. Those qualities are, therefore, perceivable in his performing aground work, through a lifetime of marriage to music.

This, too, has been said of his readings of Strauss—readings that combine a rare emotional truth with technical correctness. He would be able to highlight all these points in the most intensely focused way but always keeping the big picture prime before anything else. This characterized his performance of Strauss. May it be the heroic ideas of Ein Heldenleben or the lyrical beauty of the Vier Letzte Lieder, it is the magic of Mehta’s baton that brought the pieces to new life and spoke to those experienced and new alike in the realm of classical music.

He is looking forward to getting associated with the Symphony Orchestra of India. “I look forward to bringing my experience to the highly talented SOI musicians who are capable of doing justice to these technically demanding works,” he says. For SOI, it is that one moment of pride to get the chance to work with a conductor of his esteem.

Being the only professional orchestra in India, SOI has started to make its mark steadily in the world music location. Working with him for the musicians is a special affair in its way, where they are lessening from a maestro who has perfected some of the toughest works of the orchestral canon over the experience of decades. In all his experience, what Mehta does is not concentrate on the bare technicality of conducting but bring out the dimension of emotional interpretation: the lesson that no doubt gets rubbed off onto the musicians of the orchestra.
